This team of dedicated volunteers are responsible for processing firewood starting in winter and keeping the Outpost camp store well stocked throughout the camping season into Fall.
From Hazardous Tree to Campfire
The park maintenance department cuts down hazardous trees throughout the park, mostly in early spring.
Volunteers then trim and cut the downed trees to the length needed for the park staff to transport the logs to the firewood processing area.
The logs are fed into a wood processor subcontracted by the Friends group that cuts and splits the wood.
The wood is cut into irregular pieces, so volunteers are needed to sort the wood.
The trunk size on some pieces is too large for the processor, so volunteers cut those logs using a chainsaw and then split it.
After the wood is seasoned, it is hauled to the Outpost located near the Contact Station just inside the campground entrance.
It is stacked in the Outpost storage shed then sold during store hours. Firewood can also be bought in convenient bags as well.
For after store hours wood and ice sales, visit the shed across from the Outpost. Cash only sales. Hours vary.
